The Story of the Man Behind Our Chainmail

There is a man behind the chainmail. I could tell you about the things he makes—the hours spent working with thousands of tiny rings, the patience, precision, and skill required to turn individual pieces of metal into something beautiful.

But that wouldn't really tell you who he is. The things he creates are only one part of the story. The man behind them is so much more: a son, a brother, a father, a grandfather, a husband, a veteran, and a craftsman. In my completely unbiased opinion—which I realize is absolutely not unbiased—he is one hell of a good man. And yes, I am going to brag about him. I'm his wife; I'm allowed.

BEFORE THE MAN I KNOW TODAY

I didn't meet Greg after he had already lived half his life. We were high school sweethearts. I knew the young man before the uniform, before the years of military service, and before the experiences that would shape him. I knew the young man he was becoming, and over the years, I've had the privilege of knowing the man he became.

I’ve seen him grow and change. One of the most beautiful things about knowing someone for this long is that you don't just know who they are today; you remember pieces of the person they used to be—the dreams, the personality, the things that made them laugh. Then one day, you look at them and realize how much life has happened since then. He's still the same person in so many ways, just with a lot more life behind him and a lot more opinions. Okay... A LOT more opinions. 😂

THE VETERAN

There is one part of Greg's story that deserves deep respect: he is a veteran. That isn't simply a title; it is part of his life. He served his country, including deployments to Iraq, and those experiences became part of the person he is today.

Military service asks for discipline, responsibility, courage, and commitment. Sometimes it leaves you carrying things that don't disappear when the uniform comes off. I can't tell his military story for him, but I can tell you that I am proud of the man who served, what he gave, and the strength it took to do it. That part of him matters, so it matters to me.

THE MAN BEHIND THE TITLE

Titles like Veteran, Father, or Craftsman only tell you so much. They don't capture his sense of humor, the little things he cares about, or how much he loves his people. They don't mention the stubborn streak—and believe me, there is a stubborn streak! 😂 But they also don't tell you about the heart underneath it all. That's the part I know, the part that makes me proud to call him my husband.

HE HAS A WAY OF MAKING THINGS

One of the things I love about Greg is how his mind works. He doesn't just see a pile of rings; he sees possibility. That’s creativity—being willing to figure things out, make mistakes, and keep working until the idea in your head becomes something you can actually hold. When I watch him make chainmail, I don't just see the finished piece; I see the person who had to imagine it first.

ONE RING AT A TIME

Chainmail begins with one ring, then another, until those tiny pieces become a pattern—something strong, beautiful, and new. There is something almost magical about watching hundreds of tiny pieces become one complete thing. People don't see the adjustments or the patience when they look at the finished product. They see the chainmail; I see the man who made it.

MORE THAN CHAINMAIL

The chainmail is his craft, but it’s also personal. Every creation carries his time, effort, and imagination. That’s what makes handmade things different—someone gave a piece of themselves to it. Greg does that every time he sits down to create.

AND YES, I'M GOING TO BRAG

Greg is a good man, not because he’s perfect, but because of his heart. I've watched him carry things quietly, keep going, and continue to create. Being a good person is about what you do with the life you've been given and how you treat the people you love. I’m biased, but I have pretty good evidence. 😂

A GLIMPSE BEHIND THE CHAINMAIL

Behind the veteran and the craftsman is a man with a history, a family, and a creative mind. That’s the part I hope comes through when you see his work, because there is always a person behind the creation.

THE HEART BEHIND THE CRAFT

I could write about his hands or his patience, but what I really want you to know is this: he's a good man. The kind of good that notices the little things, carries his family with him, and makes me laugh when I don't want to.

I am proud of the young man I knew, the veteran he became, and the craftsman sitting behind those rings. Like chainmail, people are made of pieces—memories, mistakes, joy, and love. I still get to discover pieces of him after all these years, and that’s what I love most. Loving someone is being curious about who they’re still becoming.

So when you see his chainmail, I hope you see more than metal. I hope you see the man behind it—the veteran, the husband, the stubborn pain in my ass, and the man who is entirely too handsome for his own good. I said what I said. I'm his wife; I'm allowed! 😂❤️

That's Greg. A little glimpse of the man behind the chainmail.
